Photo Editor Suite is another photo editing option for BlackBerry

A few months back we had a discussion on the BBGeeks Twitter feed about the lack of photo editing options on the BlackBerry. Since then we’ve been over a few options — including Photo Editor Ultimate earlier this month — but I want to point out when new apps hit the store. Different people have different standards in photo editing apps, and honestly Photo Editor Ultimate isn’t the most efficient app. There’s a new one in the BBGeeks Store, though, and I like the looks of this one.

While other BlackBerry photo editors take care of some tasks, from what I’ve seen Photo Editor Suite is the one that brings them all together. If you find a photo editing app that can’t crop, rotate, and re-size photos, you’re better off not even getting it. In fact, if that’s all you want, I’d recommend just getting the free version of Photo Editor Ultimate. If you want a bit more, though, Photo Editor Suite brings the features.

In order to get the spiffiest looking picture, you can adjust both the brightness and the contrast. You can also recolor the image, if you want, in RGB mode. I’ve found that photos in RGB mode resize a bit better than those in other modes — at least, that’s what I’ve noticed while using Photoshop. You can also change the color scheme to black and white, pop, or sepia for added effect.

Then there are the personalized additions you can make. This includes drawing lines and shapes on the image. You can also add doodles, text, and various brush effects. This is even useful in a professional setting, as it allows you to annotate the photo. Then you can send the picture in an email right from the app.

If you’re a Mac user, this compares well to the stripped down photo editing app ImageWell. That’s what I use on a daily basis, since I resize more than a dozen photos per day; the app is much, much smaller than Photoshop. Having a similar app on my BlackBerry can be a savior.

Those who seek a powerful, comprehensive photo editing application can get Photo Editor Suite while it’s on sale. Right now it’s $3.99, down from the normal $5.99 price. Since the BBGeeks Store no longer lists OS compatibility, here’s the list of compatible devices:

9570, Bold 9650, Bold 9700, Bold 9780, Curve 8520, Curve 8530, Curve 8900, Curve 8910, Curve 8930, Curve 8980, Curve 9300 3G, Curve 9330 3G, Storm 9500, Storm 9530/9530T, Storm2 9550/9520, Torch 9800, Tour 9630

Remember, always, to set your device so that Mobihand can automatically detect whether it’s compatible with your device.

Keep your devices connected with xtop

A Canadian tech firm has finally launched the full-release version of its downloadable smartphone app that links your smartphone with a laptop, desktop or netbook. It’s like having several apps, such as Blunt, Tether and others, all in one.

Intelligent Mechatronic Systems Inc. (IMS) is thinking outside the box when it comes to the standard smartphone experience. Its new application, called xtop, links your ‘Berry with up to three different devices via secure Bluetooth connection. We have heard from undisclosed sources within IMS that it’s built with some of the same technology the company used for its voice-interactive in-car platform, iLane, the device that lets you talk to your BlackBerry while driving.

Users of xtop can receive and send emails with a PC from just about anywhere — the office, at home, or commuting to work on the bus. Unfortunately you can’t just use voice commands like you can with iLane, but that would be cool – very Star Trek.

So, let’s say you’re in an important meeting with the bosses when your phone begins to wail like a newborn. Embarrassing, right? Well, xtop allows a user to see incoming calls on their laptop computer while it remains on silent in your pocket.

But xtop works the other way, too. Users can send and receive texts and instant messages from their computer. In fact, xtop features a special chat window just for this kind of interaction. (And let’s face it — texting on those tiny smartphone buttons is never preferable to a big ‘ol desktop keyboard.)

At the same time, xtop users can access a webmail account (like Gmail or Yahoo! Mail) on any smartphone, even if it isn’t near a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Interestingly, xtop also allows us to access our BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) and BlackBerry Express Server (BES) accounts without being on our BlackBerrys. Users can also tinker with their smartphone contact lists on a Bluetooth-connected PC.

IMS, which is based in the burgeoning tech metropolis of Waterloo, Ontario, has been shopping around xtop in beta form for some time. With its final edition finally available, those interested in downloading it can find xtop on,, or select carriers for about $59 per year.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager 6.1 coming soon?

One of our BlackBerry sources just shot us over some information on the latest version of Desktop Manager, version 6.1. Besides bringing compatibility to upcoming BlackBerry handsets that will run OS 6.1, Desktop Manager 6.1 is also said to bring little enhancements and changes to the desktop application. One noticeable addition we caught? The ability to forget a previously backed up / synced device. See? Still using a BlackBerry has its perks from time to time. One more shot of the new Desktop Manager after the break.

BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone available April 26th?

A few weeks ago rumours were that RIM will be expanding their BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app past BlackBerry devices and have it available to Android and iOS devices. If and when BBM will be implemented on other platforms it won’t be the full experience that BlackBerry users love but a stripped down version.

The Android BBM app is expected to be released sometime this year but a release on the iPhone is still unknown. However, another fresh rumour is brewing over at MacRumours of an April 26th release of the BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone. Apparently RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie was in Toronto today speaking at an event where he off-handed announced the app will be available for download in the App Store on April 26th (Thursday), then an update to follow in the Summer with a new “notification system”.

“RIM had a Social Media conference today in Toronto, and my entire college business and marketing class was invited to the event. RIM’s co-ceo Jim Balsillie revealed that they plan to bring BBM and “other services” to iPhone on April 26 via the app store. Major news networks are expected to pick up on this very soon! Balsillie also revealed that they plan to release an update to the app this summer which will take advantage of a new “notification system”!!!”

BBM Video icon spotted in Rogers PlayBook overview video

Last time around, RIM had nothing to say when I asked what the plan was with video chat on the BlackBerry PlayBook. All we really got is that they will have something out for us to video chat on. Now it has come to surface as a BBM Video icon has appeared in the latest BlackBerry PlayBook video for Rogers.

So the video chat isn’t exactly integrated in BBM, but instead it appears to have a separate icon specifically for BBM video chatting. Perhaps this could change where two can become one.

Now for an interesting point. From what we understand now, you won’t be able to BBM without bridging your BlackBerry over to the PlayBook. What happens to users who do not own a BlackBerry smartphone but have a PlayBook? Do they get to use BBM chat, or will they have to rely on third party applications in the future?

BlackBerry Messenger v5.0.3.13 now available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone

If you're a person who likes to have the latest BlackBerry Messenger available at all times then you'll want to hit up the BlackBerry Beta Zone as they've now released v5.0.3.13. If you're expecting an huge visual changes or things of that sort -- you'll be sadly disappointed. As with most releases these days it's bug-fixes and back end work to improve overall functionality as noted in the Beta Zone

What's New in this Version?

The short answer? Nothing that you can really see. We've made a few minor back-end fixes to the application and would like to make sure everything is working just fine. You may not see any of the bugs or feature requests you reported for BlackBerry Messenger v5.0.2 addressed in this build, but don't be discouraged! Rest assured that we've received ALL your feedback and it will all be taken into consideration for future versions of the software

You can head on over to the BlackBerry Beta Zone now to grab the download file. Just be sure to back up your current BlackBerry Messenger databases before installation.

LiveProfile now available for BlackBerry

LiveProfile is an awesome cross-platform messaging app for Android and iOS, that is now available for BlackBerry. It features a very nice dark UI, as well as a ton of features you would come to expect in a messaging app, and a few you wouldn't. Here are some of those features:

* Badges for sent, delivered, and read messages
* Displays when a contact is typing (and when a contact is reading)
* Ability to update status to Facebook and Twitter
* Add contacts by scanning your address book, Twitter, and Facebook
* PIN assigned to your account, for easy sharing
* Coming Soon- Outgoing Photo Attachments

While we have seen some messengers come and go, or even just not live up to all of our high BBM standards, I think LiveProfile is by far the best of the bunch. It brings most of the core messaging features that we all need, and even adds a few other nice ones (Active Chat- Shows when contact is in the chat, reading messages). My favorite feature of LiveProfile is the way it adds friends to your contact list. Giving you the ability to scan your address book, Twitter, and Facebook is definitely the way to go, and is in no way intrusive, like some other messengers. It is also fast, I mean really fast. I dare say it's more instant than BBM.

Overall I think LiveProfile is the best cross-platform messaging solution out there. If you haven't checked it out, head over to their website for a free download. It is compatible with most BlackBerry devices running OS 4.5 and up. More screenshots after the break.

Presentasi Lebih Mudah Menggunakan PlayBook

Free BlackBerry Travel App Updated to v1.0.341.99

RIM’s BlackBerry Travel app, a free branded version of WorldMate, has just received its first upgrade since launching. The upgrade is just a slight version bump but still the app is pretty popular and offers many of WorldMate’s features for free. The new version clocks in at 3.3MB up from 3.2MB so I cannot say if it is worth doing another download and reboot for such a slight update but who knows.

Check out the latest version of BlackBerry Travel in App World at this link. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

BlackBerry PlayBook Native Clock App First Look!

Following up on our CTIA 2011 quick looks at the BlackBerry PlayBook's native calculator and weather apps, next we dive into the PlayBook's native clock application. Tapping open the app there's a sense of recognition of the clock app as it is on BlackBerry Smartphones running OS 4.6 or greater (the black background, etc.), but from there you quickly realize this app has been seriously overhauled. Instead of being hidden behind the menu key, the Timer and StopWatch sub-apps are found easily on the main clock screen. And one feature that I REALLY love is the ability to create multiple clocks (different time zones, etc.) and set multiple alarms. Very cool and very handy.

On a side note, one of the things I re-realized today is the importance of the down swipe from the top on the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Tablet OS. With the PlayBook not having a menu key as is in place on the traditional BlackBerry Smartphone OS, all of your off-screen/non-displayed options are become visible when you swipe down from the top. This gesture-based way of doing things is really nice as it maximizes screen real estate and keeps apps looking clean, but the trick is you do need to think/remember to do that quick swipe down in apps to see what options are available. If you never swipe down, you could miss a lot!

Be sure to check out the video above for a closer look at the BlackBerry PlayBook's native clock app. Enjoy!

First Look: Facebook on BlackBerry PlayBook Web Browser - Allows Facebook Chat and Uploading of Photos from Camera App!

I have had quite a few opportunities to go briefly hands-on with the BlackBerry PlayBook now, but for some reason always forget to login to Facebook and see what it loads like on the PlayBook's webkit browser. This time I remembered, and as you'll see in the video above recoreded at CTIA 2011 it really is the FULL that loads. We're talking Facebook Chat and everything.

I didn't have too much time to spend on the device, but I did want to test out one thing in particular to see how the PlayBook handled it and was pleasantly surprised. On the Facebook homepage (within the web browser), I was able to use the share photo functionality flawlessly... when choosing to upload a photo, the PlayBook pulls up a file browser (photos, movies, music) and allowed me to choose which photo I wanted to share. Nice!

I'll be curious to see what happens with Facebook on the BlackBerry PlayBook over time. The full experience is definitely a little tight on the 7" PlayBook, but I don't think there's any sort of application planned at this time as there is a Facebook app on BlackBerry Smartphones. On a device like the iPad you get a bit of a toned-down/optimized version of Facebook which reduces some of the clutter, but also lacks some of the features. The PlayBook's web browser is definitely powerful, but I'm sure there's a blurry line that in some cases it'll be better to use the web browser to serve up content, while in other cases an app could make for a better experience. Be sure to check out the video above!

Update otomatis memastikan bahwa antivirus lokal tetap up to date.

NetQin Mobile Anti-virus for BlackBerry disediakan gratis melalui NetQin Website.

Free App: Take BlackBerry screenshots with vScreenshot

There’s plenty of free and premium screenshot applications out there available, and here’s another one that’s been added to the list. Surely they all perform the same task of taking a screenshot of your current BlackBerry screen, but this one has a nice option menu you might be fond of. Features of vScreenshot include:

    Enable/Disable vibrate
If you are taking many screenshots, and don’t want to see Vayyoo each time, and then find all of them ready to be sent in Vayyoo application.
Change file location between SD Card vs device
You can also change the exact path (please do it carefully)

Some of these features you’d find more or so in the premium screenshot applications, not free ones. It’s currently in the Test Center of App World for now, so there’s no word if the developers have future plans of making the application premium.

BlackBerry App World v2.1.1.2 now available for download

I was wondering why BlackBerry App World was acting a little strange today. As it turns, Research In Motion temporarily removed BlackBerry App World from -- well, BlackBerry App World and made it not downloadable during that time. Now that it has returned, users are getting the notification that BlackBerry App World v2.1.1.2 is now available for download.

At this time no change log is included with the release but if you all happen to spot anything beyond bug fixes then by all means -- feel free to let us know in the comments. If you've not yet received the notification, simply refresh App World and you may see it appear. If not, you'll have to hold out until it filters through the interwebs.

Can RIM's Cloud Push Recapture BlackBerry Magic?

RIMs BlackBerry has been steadily losing share in the smart phone market, but RIM hopes it could use the cloud computing space to offer something new and exciting like it did when it came out with its then-revolutionary push e-mail service over a decade ago.During a presentation that Alec Taylor, vice president, software, services and enterprise marketing for RIM gave Thursday, cloud applications have become "core to RIM's strategy." Taylor also claimed that RIM is "positioned to lead in mobile cloud services."

As part of its push into the cloud, RIM said it has formed a partnership with Microsoft to offer Office 365 Web-based office applications, which include SharePoint, Exchange, and Lync. RIM said BlackBerry and soon-to-be launched Playbook tablet customers will be able to use Microsoft Office 365 over the cloud free of charge in the middle of the year.
RIM says its announcement with Microsoft represents one example of many new cloud services it will offer its users. But corporate posturing aside, what does RIM's push into the cloud mean for the small business user? That mostly remains to be seen, but I know what I would like to see.

A major peeve I have always had with my BlackBerry, as well as with any other kind of Android, iPhone, or smart phone device for that matter, is how hard it is to share data with workstations, whether tethered directly to a PC or to a LAN. Sure, you can use BlackBerry's sync software to share data with PCs, but it is clunky, to say the least. Being able to use a BlackBerry or RIM's upcoming Playbook to seamlessly share data and access applications over the cloud with different PCs and devices as easily as you can between PCs on a LAN could make RIM's devices exciting again.
I also would love one day to be able to use a BlackBerry for all of my computing tasks over the cloud, whether for storage, office, or any other application. That way, I could work anywhere and everywhere with nothing but my mobile device.

But for a variety of reasons--not least of which are unresolved security concerns--the real role the cloud will play in the future of computing has yet to be determined and does not depend much on RIM.

RIM's Microsoft announcement is hardly earth-shattering, as the company will likely never capture the magic again like it did when it captivated the business world with its first BlackBerry devices. RIM will also face stiff competition in the mobile space from Google, Android, and the search giant's cloud services. At least RIM's announcement that it will offer Microsoft's cloud-based office applications is a step in the right direction. RIM also says there is a lot more to come, but only the future will tell how successful it will be.

Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0 Beta: Now with Facebook Chat!

I’m excited to announce the beta release of the Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones app v2.0 through BlackBerry® Beta Zone starting today. The Facebook app team here at Research In Motion® (RIM®) has been working hard to incorporate the feedback we have received from our users to make v2.0 the biggest update to the Facebook application since we released v1.0 more than three years ago. This initial release of v2.0 has a redesigned user interface and also offers Facebook Chat!

Below are some of the new features of Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v2.0:

    Facebook Chat

You can now check to see which of your Facebook friends are online and start a Chat conversation from within the Facebook application or within the unified mailbox on your BlackBerry smartphone.

On Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones, as long as your status is set to online, you still receive notifications even if you are not using the Facebook app.

    Improved News Feed

Improved News Feed interactions enable you to scroll through your News Feed without accidentally clicking ‘Like’; you can simply click the ‘More’ button (+) to interact with your friends’ posts. Enhanced publisher functionality allows you post photos to your Wall, add an update, or check in to a Facebook Place from the News Feed.

    New Navigation Control

By introducing a whole new way to navigate the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones application, we’ve moved from a static navigation bar to a drop-down navigation control that is scalable to support new features in the future.

    Notifications Bar

Borrowing from the BlackBerry® 6 OS’ “Today View”, the notifications bar offers an easy way to access your Facebook Notifications, Messages, Friend Requests and Chats from anywhere in the Facebook application.

    External Notifications

You don’t have to leave the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app to see what’s new on your device. The BlackBerry smartphone external notifications header lets you see when you’ve received a new email message or BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) message without having to leave the Facebook application.

New Profile UI and Profile Information Viewing

The New Profile UI now provides Wall, Info, and Photo tabs for an even better browsing experience. New to v2.0 is the ability to view key information on Profiles and Pages, such as contact info, basic info like birthdays, hometown and relationship status, and likes and interests.

Head over to BlackBerry Beta Zone today to be one of the first users to join the beta for Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v2.0! As this is an early preview, we have a limited number of beta spots open. Also, please note the initial beta release will be available for BlackBerry 6 users only, but support for BlackBerry® Device Software 4.6 and higher will be added in subsequent beta releases and will be available in the official version.

Try it out and let us know what you think!
